Contemplation in Wood

Project 3 Storey Semi-Detached House in Jalan Sinar Bulan, Singapore
Client A couple in their late 40s with 1 daughter
Date 2015

Design Brief

The clients were inspired by Villa Cemara, a magnificent beachside resort in Bali best known for its luxurious interiors adorned with finely crafted wood art and elaborately carved teakwood doors. The resort also features many artefacts and paintings by acclaimed Balinese artists.

“To further the goal of bringing Bali to Singapore through this project, our designer also curated authentic solid-timber dining tables and seats from the island. Timbers of various brown shades were blended with glass to achieve the appearance of a resort environment.”

Design Concept

With this goal to create a home that recalls the luxurious villas of Bali, the client knew which interior design style they prefered. They requested our designer Joshua to create an artistic adaptation of this resort for a custom designed house in Singapore and to help them translate the ideas into their dream home.

Joshua blended the home’s tropical surrounding with its open indoor space as the design solution. His process started with extensive research on the varieties of natural timber and tropical foliage that thrive in Singapore’s hot and humid weather to accomplish the ideal open-air resort atmosphere. To further the goal of bringing Bali to Singapore through this project, he also curated authentic solid-timber dining tables and seats from the island. Timbers of various brown shades were blended with glass to achieve the appearance of a resort environment. Other specially curated grades of timber are also used on the various fixtures and furniture in the kitchen.

To complete this luxurious interior design, individual bedhead panels in the bedrooms were also given the same timber treatment. When juxtaposed with the bare cement floor of neutral tones, a harmonious visual balance was achieved.

The entire interior design and renovation was completed in 6 months.
